What’s Really Going on With Mitch McConnell’s Health?
Mitch McConnell has been in the hospital since June 14. Over the past three weeks, the Kentucky senator’s office has provided few health updates. Now macabre speculation is running rampant. MAGA influencer Laura Loomer claimed the 84-year-old former Republican majority leader is “brain dead” and will never return to the Senate. But several of McConnell’s friends and colleagues say they’ve just spoken to him on the phone and he’s eager to get back to work.
So what’s really going on here? Is the senator’s condition actually more serious than his office is letting on, or do people just love spinning conspiracy theories and dropping Weekend at Bernie’s references? Here’s a guide, which we’ll keep updated, to everything we know about McConnell’s health.
Why was Mitch McConnell hospitalized?
McConnell’s office announced his latest health issue with a brief and vague statement on Sunday, June 14.
“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning,” said spokesperson David Popp. “He is receiving excellent care.”
Two and a half weeks later, audio emerged from a dispatch call that suggested emergency medical personnel were called to McConnell’s Washington, D.C., home because an “unconscious person” was in possible “cardiac arrest.” The call went out at 8:36 a.m. on June 14. An ambulance was dispatched with an advanced life-support crew. Six minutes later, a medic on the call said, “CPR in progress.” They were then joined by another EMS team at the same address.
Audio from the public EMS dispatch call was first shared on July 1 by independent journalist Desirée Townsend and was then reviewed by several media outlets, including NBC News and CBS News.

CNN noted, “McConnell’s name is not mentioned in the recording, but the address that paramedics responded to is known to be his address. CNN has not confirmed the details of what dispatchers and medics described in the audio.”
What is McConnell’s current condition?
We don’t know. McConnell’s office said he “continues to improve” but has not said why he was hospitalized in the first place nor given more specific information about his condition or what treatment he is receiving.
What has McConnell’s office said?
A day after announcing McConnell’s hospitalization, his office issued a statement saying he was “fully engaged” and receiving “outstanding care.”
