We hear a lot of talk these days about the fears that Artificial Intelligence will soon become so sophisticated that it will take over and – in the worst of cases – extinguish the human race or – in the best of cases – enslave us. Of course, those fears need to be seen in the context that humans already seem hellbent on extinguishing themselves while slavery in different guises is still a fact of human existence, and all without the need to call on the assistance of any digital overlord.

Whatever the case, I know that I’m not alone in turning to AI more and more these days to carry out tasks that – in my case at least – are basic but time-consuming, such as dredging up facts and figures to use in an article, or that present a level of complexity that AI handles with aplomb compared to my hamfisted and error-strewn efforts, such as planning a detailed itinerary for a motorbike trip in France.
