Carney’s airport privatization is a looming disaster: ‘Highway 407 of the skies’

Mark Carney took another giant step in his right-wing crusade Tuesday, announcing a plan to effectively privatize four of Canada’s largest airports in Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver and Calgary. Liberal pundits—ever the goalpost movers—went from saying Carney would never implement such a Poilievre-style policy to instantly defending it, insisting the media and NDP are fear-mongering and that Carney is merely privatizing the operation of major airports, not the actual airports themselves.

But even if we assume this is true, Carney’s plan sells out our public property for private gain, much as Highway 407 was privatized years ago in Ontario, with catastrophic results for the people of the province. As former Unifor economist Jim Stanford noted, “Whether the actual land is still publicly owned or not is almost a moot point. This is going to be Highway 407 of the skies.”
