My 'Gen X' boyhood -and adulthood-has scenes of cinematic conflict illustrating it. One of the most memorable was the fiery demise of Nazi Panzer tank commander 'Colonel Hessler' (Robert Shaw) in 1965's 'Battle of the Bulge' drama starring Henry Fonda:

Followed by John Wayne's 1968 Vietnam war epic, 'The Green Berets.' However one felt about that war, any action fan would agree the slain 'Kolwalski' character went out like a soldier. See for yourself:

Fun fact: The actor in that jungle scene went on to portray 'Junior' in Burt Reynolds' 'Smokey and the Bandit' movies, starting in........
