America has a love/hate relationship with security professionals. While I wouldn't put it past 'anti safety' Democrats, can you imagine defunding the FBI, US Marshals Service, Inspector-General offices and federal police departments? Snatching pay away from TSA agents who aren't law enforcement officers, however, was 'doable'.

From the right these unarmed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel face privatization calls. Their union is also on the chopping block among certain conservatives. I've never heard the right target police unions yet feel ones for non-police personnel need to be abolished.

Security screeners are exactly where non-law enforcement professionals need to be: frontline in assessing and inspecting the traveling public for plane-destroying weapons, warrants and contraband. Contempt toward unarmed protectors without arrest powers runs deep in the country.

Even TSA-defunding Democrats want safety while flying. Their contempt toward security screeners is at odds with that intention.

Law enforcement personnel aren't the only line of defense. America has a love/hate relationship with security professionals. Ones stationed at airports were forced to the forefront by this latest partial government shutdown.

Even if you don't like Transportation Security Administration methods, which can be changed, the function still deserves uninterrupted funding.Love them or hate them, security professionals are needed now more than ever.
