Cambridgeshire guided busway fence gets 'lack of insight' verdict
A new fence is due to be installed along the entire guided busway. Additional measures will be put in place to address flooding concerns that Cambridgeshire County Council acknowledges pose a safety hazard.
The council faced a £6 million penalty after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) took legal action due to "serious safety failings" on the busway. An investigation was launched by the HSE following the tragic deaths of three individuals who were struck by buses on the busway.
Frank Jordan, executive director for place and sustainability at the county council, expressed the authority's ongoing condolences to the affected families and offered an unreserved apology for its shortcomings.
Speaking at a highways and transport committee meeting, he admitted that the county council had pleaded guilty due to its failure to manage risk on the busway. He added that safety measures have been implemented since 2021.
