Imagine for a moment what the reaction would be if a future Alberta NDP government demanded that Calgary and Edmonton build more bike lanes.

Further imagine that the backdrop to such a demand was a worrying rise in dangerous crashes and pedestrian deaths on Alberta roads.

A Conservative opposition would surely denounce the government for needlessly straying into municipal jurisdiction and for prioritizing their own political fixation over much more pressing road safety issues.

It’s unclear whether Alberta might see another NDP government, or whether voters would ever entertain such a silly idea. But the UCP’s own fixation around this issue has become abundantly clear, and we’re now witnessing the opposite side of that same political coin.
