Brookman: We need to follow path Fathers of Confederation set out for us
In the book, How The Fathers Made A Deal, author Christopher Moore describes how challenging it was to create the nation that we know and love as Canada. He talks about the demands of the French, how British Columbia wanted a railway, how the Maritimes were afraid that their interests would be ignored and how the Prairies, sparsely populated and hard up, wanted to be recognized for the rich agriculture they would bring to the table.
The negotiations took months without telephones or airplanes, and there were times when one or more of the Fathers of Confederation wanted to walk away. The threat of the United States hung over their heads, and the determination to make a deal dominated their thoughts.
