As the rivers rise and the rain keeps falling, Mayor Jeromy Farkas says this is a difficult moment for many Calgarians.

“I know, having represented Ward 11 communities, that this is a deeply emotional time,” said the mayor.

He’s got that right. Many people in riverside neighbourhoods sold out after the great flood of 2013. They couldn’t face another spring of fear and worry near the rivers.

“People need to have the confidence that we’re taking this seriously,” Farkas said in an interview.

“There’s always heightened level of risk between that May 15 to June 15 period.”

We were talking on Monday morning. At that point, the deluge was expected to continue into Tuesday.

These rains look ominously familiar to Calgarians who lived through the 2013 flood.

Once again, extended downpours coincide with the weeks of snowmelt.

“Right now, we have a provincial high streamflow advisory,” the mayor said.

“It has been issued for several basins surrounding Calgary, and it may be issued for the Bow and Elbow rivers, as well.”
