Nelson: When Albertans vote to stay, at least Canada can say thanks
Why do Canadians keep flocking to Alberta? Haven’t they heard we might separate?
And why is the economy of our province expected to be the strongest in Canada over the next few years? Don’t economists understand this could be a separate country by then?
Nobody asks those questions. Instead, we‘re told that if Alberta goes it alone, half the population will pull up stakes and flee. Well, those moving here today must either live in a fog or enjoy traipsing across the Prairies every few years if such nonsense is believed.
Those pushing separatism might consider mentioning such recent trends on in-migration and projected GDP growth to help make their go-it-alone case. But, at heart, those leaders aren’t really serious about anything other than shouting at the clouds about how unfair everything is. (Actually, I suspect it is more a desire for a return to the days of Social Credit governance, when this province was more rural, more white and much more dominated by men. Well, shout as loud as they want, that society’s gone for good.)
