An unexpected turn: Mileinomics reaches for “Keynesian” measures to revive the economy

Javier Milei’s government has announced a series of measures in recent days aimed at reviving domestic demand and, with it, an economy that cannot get off the ground.

The libertarian administration opened up dollar bank lending to companies across the board, not just exporters, while word emerged from the Labor Secretariat that it is seeking a floor of AR$1 million (US$653) for gross registered wages.

The latest of these measures was to start using funds from the ANSES pension agency to give banks the liquidity they need to begin offering mortgages at lower interest rates than those currently on offer.

That prompted some to poke fun at the economic team’s “Keynesian turn,” given Milei’s fierce rejection of policies inspired by the British economist John Maynard Keynes — that is, policies focused on stimulating domestic consumption to get the........
