Where was God on 9/11?
Memories of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, are still deeply etched in my mind. I had just moved to Denver from the University of Miami to teach my first class, titled Introduction to Islam, on that day.
When I turned on the television, I saw scenes of devastation in New York City. I felt the pain and sorrow of my fellow human beings. At work, I suddenly became a much sought-after figure as my colleagues, friends and students tried to make sense of what had just happened.

As a Muslim, I felt my religion had been hijacked and abused by those who claimed to be working on God’s behalf. What kind of God would condone the taking of innocent lives? Did God put humans on Earth to destroy one another in God’s name? Or did God want them to create a society based on justice and equality?
I searched the Qur’an to see what it had to say about the events of 9/11. I felt greatly comforted by the response I found in my scripture. The verse that kept coming to my mind was in Chapter........
