Demolition derbies bring the sounds of revving engines and metal crashing into metal to rural arenas all over Arkansas, especially during this time of year when county fairs are popping up.
The sport has long been a Natural State pastime. The 63rd annual Garland County Fair demolition derby, which took place on Sept. 5, is said to be oldest in the state. For almost as long, attendees at the Tri-County Fair in Marvell have gathered in the grandstands to watch competitors smash their repurposed jalopies into each other. This year's iteration is scheduled for Sept. 27.
