The angry Left resists as the Right rejoices: A tale of two Independence Days
“Nothing but harmony, honesty, industry, and frugality are necessary to make us a great and happy people.” — George Washington.
“[Independence Day] will be celebrated with pomp and parade, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other.” — John Adams.
That’s a sampling of the many patriotic and positive sentiments from two of our leading Founding Fathers and the first two presidents.
How about the current President, Donald Trump? What are his feelings about the country on the Fourth of July? Here’s what he had to say about the subject at Mount Rushmore on July 4, 2020.
“This great heritage belongs to citizens of every background and of every walk of life. No matter our race, color, religion, or creed, we are one America, and we put America first. We will not allow anyone to divide our citizens by race or background. We will not allow them to foment hate, discord, and distrust. We will hold fast and true to the sacred loyalties that link us all as neighbors, as Americans, and as patriots.”
But not everyone is feeling the love for Uncle Sam and the Stars and Stripes. Enter the increasingly unhinged Left, which will be holding more protests across the country on Independence Day filled not with jingoism, but jarring anger.
“No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance. From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism—and show the world what democracy really looks like. We’re not gathering to feed Trump’s ego. We’re building a movement that leaves him behind. (emphasis mine),” reads the mission statement from the “No Kings”........
