'Crown Estate profits generated from our land and seabed should benefit Wales directly'
Ever since the First Minister declared, without the slightest bit of irony, that having two Labour governments amounted to a ‘partnership in power’ – she has placed great stock on theatrical prose to give the pretence that this mantra actually means something.
The signature of this sleight of hand is scribbled all over the debate to devolve the Crown Estate.
To mark her first hundred days in office, Eluned Morgan proclaimed she was “fighting very hard” for more control over Wales’s Crown Estate assets. On the face of it, a noble declaration in keeping with the stated policy of the Labour Welsh Government.
In making the case for further devolution, it’s always important to stress that powers are sought for a purpose. With the Crown Estate it’s about ensuring that profits generated from our land and seabed benefit Wales directly – Wales’s resources benefitting Welsh communities.
This isn’t about constitutional navel gazing, it’s a matter of fairness, and devolving the Crown Estate would give Wales the same........
