Could you live off a piece of chicken, broccoli and one corn tortilla?
Did you hear the Trump administration has food affordability all figured out? It's been dubbed the Brooke Rollins $3 meal.
Using new protein-focused dietary guidelines rolled out by the Department of Agriculture, Rollins suggested that Americans on a budget should eat a piece of chicken, a piece of broccoli, a corn tortilla and one additional item during an appearance on NewsNation where the Cabinet secretary shared tips on how to save money on meals.
She wasn't exactly clear on the portions for a “piece of broccoli” or the food group for the additional item. Still, after conducting over 1,000 simulations, Rollins indicated that the average American could sustain themselves on this for about $3 a meal. As you might guess, her comments haven't gone over well with people calling it "prison" food or a "depression meal."
It sounds to me like she's suggesting a permanent "struggle meal" for hungry Americans instead of delivering on President Donald Trump's promise to curb inflation and high prices.
For those unfamiliar with the term, a struggle meal is when you gather random food items from your fridge or pantry and make a meal with what you have on hand. I’ve certainly had my fair share throughout my life, and even now, I still indulge in one occasionally.
Sometimes, a struggle meal can come from the $1 or $2 discount menu at a fast-food restaurant, especially when your credit cards are nearing their limits and you need to stretch your food budget.
