Jermaine Neverson, modern-day slave trader who pleaded guilty to trafficking, raping and confining his vulnerable “slaves” and even to killing one of their dogs, should have been put away for at least 18 years.
Instead, a judge has sentenced Neverson to just time served — four and a half years — because of the “torture” he endured at the notorious Maplehurst detention centre where jail guards in riot gear were deployed in late December 2023 in an incident now being investigated by the Ontario ombudsman.
“He was subjected to unreasonable searches of his person and of his cell. And he was cruelly and unusually treated and punished,” ruled Superior Court Justice Clayton Conlan in a decision released last month.
