Recently, a leader in the addiction care field said to me: “Our field is in trouble. Not the normal trouble. Real, serious trouble.”

I knew what they meant. Addiction care providers are beaten down after years of the opioid epidemic and then the COVID pandemic. They seem resigned to losing grants. Inflation has kicked their butts the past few years, expenses are crushing their budgets, health insurance renewals are 20% to 40% higher for the coming year, and they cannot find folks willing to work in their programs.

In the face of this, the government........
