Commentary: End Columbus Day. Make it Cabrini Day instead.
Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917) founded schools, orphanages and hospitals throughout the United States and South America. The first American citizen to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church, she is the patron saint of immigrants.
Columbus Day has come and gone, and once again, we’ve missed the opportunity to talk about why the day was created in the first place.
The holiday was not originally about glorifying Christopher Columbus’s voyages or legacy; it was a response to violence, prejudice and the urgent need for recognition.
