All In: A dive into field hockey’s history with Guilderland coach Jennifer Sykes

Guilderland head coach Jennifer Sykes talks to her team during the Class A field hockey state semifinals against Mamaroneck on Nov. 1, 2023, at Guilderland High School. Sykes brought the Lady Dutch to their first appearance in the state semifinals in 2023 and fell by just a goal in double overtime to perennial field hockey powerhouse Mamaroneck in the state championship.

I went to see “Suffs The Musical,” the Tony-award-winning production about the women’s suffrage movement. The play focuses on the seven years leading up to the passage in 1920 of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote.

Not only did it open my eyes to the efforts of the amazing women behind the effort, and what they achieved and endured (including physical attacks, jailing, hunger strikes, force feeding and threats of psychiatric institutionalism), it also opened my eyes to the history of field hockey.
