WILTON — It was one of those wet and dreary mornings when it would have been easy to scrap the exercise and stay inside. But that isn’t Doug Logan.

If it’s cold and windy, he walks. If it snows or rains, he walks. If it’s hot and humid, he walks — which is to say that Logan, who is 81, seldom finds an excuse to sit on the couch instead. And so he and I set out on a recent morning from his home in Wilton without regard for the early April gloom.

Logan takes his daily walks with a bigger goal in mind. Day by day and step by step, he’s aiming to log 24,901 miles, which is equal to Earth’s circumference at the equator. It’s a target he set 14 years ago when his doctor told him it was time to give up running.

“I’m walking around the world, one walk at a time,” Logan told me, adding that people tend to look at him a little cockeyed when he tells them what he’s up to. “Maybe I’m crazy,” he added.

Maybe. But if so, Logan’s a physically fit crazy. If he’s carrying an ounce of fat on his lean frame, he hides it well.
