Letters Oct. 27: Canadian election 'pride'; Goldstream speed limits

While it is unfortunate that Americans have chosen a dangerous buffoon to be their president, neither columnist Gene Miller nor Canadians in general should get too uppity and self-righteous about it.

After all, we (actually, you, not me) elected a vain and arrogant nepo baby three times on no other grounds than that his last name was familiar.

All he did was throw the economy into free-fall, make Canada a laughing stock around the world, obliterate our financial balance sheet, and, oh yeah, freeze the bank accounts of some protesters he didn’t like.

I’m not sure Trump has accomplished as much down south, although he’s got a couple of years to go.

Besides which, when you consider his electoral opponent, it is not unreasonable to believe that Trump was the lesser evil — as incredible as that may sound.

One more point: It is just possible that Americans looked around their cities and towns and, seeing the rampant addiction/homelessness/crime blight in every direction, arrived at the conclusion that desperate times call for desperate measures.

Does that ring any bells around here? When what you’ve been doing seems to only make things worse, maybe it’s time to try something else.

On Oct. 16, Victoria city council considered the proposed project at Kingston, Montreal and Quebec Streets for a final vote.

Council members and the mayor noted with surprise that the Official Community Plan now reflects a boundary change that places this development and three blocks on the harbour side of Kingston over to Menzies in the “Inner Harbour District.”

This adjustment subjects the project to different rules on density and height compared to residential James Bay. The council and mayor voted to refer the proposal back to the planning department due to the expected changes in the OCP.

The proposed 14-storey tower exceeds bylaws on height and density for residential districts such as James Bay and for the Inner Harbour District.
