Letters Nov. 5: Changing clocks makes sense; Blue Jays spark unity
The proposed data centre for the Nanaimo area and the associated massive fresh water usage and waste is unacceptable.
Also on a large scale is the massive power these centres require.
If B.C. Hydro commits to supplying power for the proposal, part of the approvals process should stipulate that all data centres use closed loop cooling systems utilizing cooling towers and other measures to minimize or eliminate water consumption.
The only reason for not using closed loop cooling systems is additional cost of construction and additional power consumption to operate a closed loop system.
We must stop wasting water and stop trading the little water we have for small amounts of money, and plan for other future power requirements before data centres electrical supply is approved.

Tariffs are definitely the talk of the town, but I was not fully aware how tariffs work. After much discussion and research, I think I might understand the concept a little better.
The U.S. puts tariffs on Canadian lumber and steel and other commodities. Once that product is shipped to the U.S., the tariff is placed on the product as it enters the U.S.
That price is then often paid by the buyer who ordered the commodity. The price is much higher now and the buyer might decide to not purchase the commodity anymore.
Consequently, Canadian exporters of that commodity will have their sales decreased and this will lead to layoffs for that manufacturer. If this continues, and more and more people are laid off, we could enter into a recession!
So U.S. President Donald Trump is right when he says tariffs hurt a country like Canada. The reason it hurts Canada is by increasing unemployment and causing a recession.
The U.S. might increase its tariff fund but not by much since fewer and fewer businesses will purchase products at the higher price.
They will look elsewhere to purchase products at a lower price.

Changing the time twice a year should be abolished by a simple solution to a silly problem: Go back half an hour in the fall and leave it there.
No more going ahead in the........
