Letters Feb. 20: No booing at Victoria game; give young people a reason to stay; do nothing on tariffs

During the Family Day holiday, a friend and I attended a matinee game with the Victoria Royals hosting the Everett Silvertips. With the recent tariff wars threatened between our two countries, and the “booing” that has occurred at many Canada-U.S. games, I was curious about what would happen at the game in Victoria.

My concerns were allayed however, when Victoria’s announcer extraordinaire, Cliff LeQuesne, made an eloquent statement regarding the deportment of the fans, just before the playing of the American national anthem.

The anthem was played, fans cheered and there was not a “boo” in the house. The mood was both respectful and polite. And, after all, isn’t that what we Canadians do?

Unfortunately, the Silvertips edged the Royals 3-2. Maybe our egos were bruised a little by the loss of the game, but we could all go home with our heads held high, knowing that we showed respect and decorum for our neighbours.

Thank you, Victoria, you’re a class act.

Re: “Where’s our King? And the Commonwealth?” letter, Feb. 18.

A letter seems confused about the role of the King of Canada, our Governor General and the Commonwealth in providing possible assistance to us, given the aggressive stance of President Donald Trump.

In this case, the King’s country is our country, not the U.K.’s. So the short answer is that we are on deck to provide assistance to ourselves and not rely on what was once the “mother country” or the wider Commonwealth.

The best defence to Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian products is to do nothing. Tariffs are a tax on the citizens of the country imposing the tariffs, not the country selling the product. Trump wants us to impose tariffs so that he can escalate his tariff wars, something that we cannot match.

If we do not place tariffs on U.S. products, Trump has no excuse to increase his tariffs. He would revel in a tariff war.

If we put tariffs on American goods we are in effect “attacking” Americans. History shows us that when........
