Editorial: Evidence of effectiveness? Let's start with the human rights commission

In a letter to the province’s education minister last week, B.C. human rights commissioner Kasari Govender said that there are “significant gaps” in evidence favouring police liaison officers in schools.

Govender has been a supporter of the Greater Victoria School Board’s decision to remove liaison officers across its district.

Specifically, in her letter Govender asserted that the ministry’s alleged failure to fund research into the need for liaison officers “undermines its stated values to combat racism.”

She believes, apparently, that there is insufficient evidence to support police claims of growing gang presence in local schools. Really?

As we reported, from mid-2022 through August 2024, the Saanich police force Major Crime Unit had 35 investigations linked to gang activity in Saanich schools.
