Spanish map of Jewish and ‘Zionist’ businesses taken down amid uproar

An online map identifying Jewish- and Israeli-linked businesses in the Catalonia region of Spain has been taken down after drawing sharp criticism from Spain’s Jewish community.

The project, called “Barcelonaz,” appeared this week on the French-hosted mapping platform GoGoCart, claiming to be “a collaborative map of the Zionist economy in Barcelona.” It listed more than 150 businesses, schools and organizations that it labeled as “Zionist.”

Numerous groups, including the Movement Against Intolerance and the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), petitioned to have the site removed, and by Friday afternoon it had been removed by GoGoCart.

The site’s origins are still being investigated.

“The mapping and boycotting of Jewish businesses in Catalonia is an echo of some of the darkest chapters in history, including the prelude to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany,” CAM Director of European Affairs Shannon Seban said Friday.
