A Jewish neighbor exclaimed “I can’t support Israel as long as Donald Trump is president.”

His words were startling, but not surprising. They exposed a troubling reality that extends well beyond one individual’s political views.

Israel is caught in the jaws of partisanship and that does not bode well for the Jewish state.

For some American Jews, opposition to Donald Trump has become so consuming that it now eclipses support for the Jewish state. They insist their position is not about Israel at all. They argue that saving America from Trump’s policies must take precedence over everything else.

But that explanation raises an uncomfortable question. Why should one’s opinion of an American president determine one’s support for the survival of Israel?

Loving America and supporting Israel are not mutually exclusive. Millions of American Jews have always believed they owe loyalty to both countries. America’s success has provided Jews with unprecedented freedom and opportunity.........
