Rise in Antisemitism Cases and Hate Speech on the Agenda

Representatives of the Jewish community met on Friday, March 13, with Francisco Eduardo Loureiro, president of the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJSP), at the Palace of Justice to discuss the community’s concerns over the growing antisemitism and hate speech in Brazil.

The meeting was led by Célia Parnes, president of the Israelite Federation of the State of São Paulo (Fisesp) and general secretary of the Confederation of Israelite Entities of Brazil (CONIB). From Fisesp, participants included legal director Luna Harari, government relations director Daniel Kignel, and executive president Ricardo Berkiensztat. From CONIB, attorney and entity secretary Rony Vainzof and legal director Andrea Vainer were present. Members of the Fisesp/Conib Legal Committee also attended: Renato Schwartz, Daniel Bialski, and Evane Beiguelman.

Representing the Court of Justice, the meeting was joined by judges Roberto Nussinkis Mac Cracken, Daniel Blikstein, and José Damião Pinheiro Machado Cogan, along with TJSP advisory judge Airton Pinheiro de Castro.

During the meeting, the importance of the Judiciary’s role in combating antisemitism was highlighted, particularly in applying legislation that equates antisemitic practices with the crime of racism in Brazil.

The meeting also aimed to strengthen institutional dialogue and discuss pathways for cooperation with the justice system to address hate speech and crimes motivated by intolerance.
