Leadership integrity is the alignment of values, words, and actions, especially when ethical choices carry personal or political costs. It rests on honesty, accountability, fairness, and moral consistency rather than opportunism or status. An integrity-driven leader applies the same standards to everyone, communicates truthfully about success and failure, and accepts responsibility instead of shifting blame.

Why Integrity Matters

Integrity builds trust, psychological safety, and durable institutions. It gives leaders a reliable compass in crises when rules are incomplete and pressure is intense. In practice, it means giving credit, delivering difficult news directly, applying standards fairly, protecting public resources, and choosing long-term legitimacy over short-term advantage.

Johnson & Johnson: People Before Profit

In 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking cyanide-laced Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules. Although the contamination source and geographic scope were uncertain, CEO James Burke ordered a nationwide recall of thirty-one million bottles at a cost exceeding $100 million. Johnson & Johnson warned the public, stopped advertising, cooperated with authorities, and helped introduce tamper-evident packaging.
