A Somali Proverb on Blowback: “Do Not Dig the Pit Too Deep”

Some proverbs endure because they capture recurring patterns of human behavior. One Somali saying offers a particularly clear warning about unintended consequences: “Do not dig a pit of harm; but if you do, do not make it deep, for you may be the one who falls into it.” The proverb addresses not only the morality of causing harm, but also the strategic risks of escalation. Its enduring relevance lies in its emphasis on restraint rather than idealism.

At its core, the proverb describes a familiar dynamic: actions intended to damage others can create conditions that harm the initiator. The “pit” (booraan) represents a trap—deliberately constructed through deception, coercion, or manipulation. The crucial element, however, is depth. The deeper the pit, the more dangerous it becomes for everyone involved, including its creator. Once a harmful course of action is set in motion, controlling its consequences becomes increasingly difficult.

Unlike many moral aphorisms that simply prohibit wrongdoing, this proverb introduces a more pragmatic warning. It acknowledges that conflict, rivalry, and even malice are realities of political and social life.
