Introduction: When Ideas Stop Guiding Power

Across Africa, politics has never been driven by power alone. Ideas have always mattered ideas shaped, defended, and sometimes distorted by intellectuals.

There was a time when the African intellectual stood as a moral compass. They were voices of truth in difficult moments, challengers of injustice, and defenders of dignity. They didn’t simply observe politics they helped shape it.

But something has changed.

In many places today, the intellectual is no longer seen as a guardian of truth, but as someone who bends with power. Instead of challenging authority, they often move closer to it. Instead of questioning decisions, they help justify them.

This shift forces us to confront an uncomfortable question: What happened to values in African politics?

The Intellectual We Once Knew

During the struggles against colonialism and injustice, African intellectuals played a remarkable role. They were not neutral observers. They were deeply involved in shaping the future.

They spoke out against oppression, often at great personal risk. They educated and mobilized ordinary people. They helped imagine a different Africa one built on freedom, dignity, and........
