As the FIFA Club World Cup draws to a close this Sunday, one thought lingers. For a few remarkable weeks, billions of people spoke the same language. Not English or Arabic or Mandarin, but the language of sport.

In stadiums, bars, and living rooms alike, strangers celebrated and mourned together. Like music, sport crosses borders that politics often cannot. A great goal, like a great song, needs no translation.
