Our contemporary imagination of the Viking Age remains fundamentally captive to popular culture; cinematic narratives such as Vikings and The Last Kingdom continuously reify the historical trope of swift longships descending upon defenseless coasts. But history rarely conforms to the neat boxes of popular imagination. To understand the earliest encounters between the Norsemen and the Land of Israel, we must look beyond the violent flash of sword and shield and instead toward a much quieter, more profound phenomenon: the migration of an idea. Long before any Scandinavian monarch arrived with banners flying, Jerusalem had already captured the northern imagination.

The earliest evidence of this connection is not written in blood, but etched into stone. In the mid-eleventh century, two Swedish runestones were raised in Uppland. On their weathered surfaces, we find a word that feels........
