For more than a century and a half, Congregation Shaarey Zedek (CSZ) has stood as a vibrant center of Jewish life, tradition, and community in Metro Detroit. Founded in 1861, the congregation has grown from a small group of dedicated families into a thriving spiritual home known for its deep roots in Conservative Judaism, its rich musical heritage, and its enduring commitment to inclusivity. From historic beginnings in Detroit to its modern sanctuary in Southfield, CSZ continues to blend tradition with innovation in worship, education, and communal life.

Today, the congregation is especially celebrated for its engaging and warm rabbis, its inspiring musical worship led by acclaimed cantorial leadership and professional choirs, as well as its welcoming approach to people of all backgrounds and identities. Through dynamic services, lifelong learning opportunities, and a strong sense of belonging, Shaarey Zedek remains a place where history and harmony meet—offering a spiritual home where every voice is invited to sing.

The building combines striking symbolism with functional spaces for worship, education, and community life, making it one of metropolitan Detroit’s most distinctive religious structures.

The interior of Congregation Shaarey Zedek is designed to inspire both reverence and community. Its spacious sanctuary features soaring ceilings, warm wood accents, and expansive stained-glass windows that fill the space with natural light. The sanctuary’s dramatic angular design draws attention toward the bimah and Ark, creating a strong focal point for worship. Throughout the building, gathering areas, classrooms, and social spaces support religious, educational, and communal activities, reflecting the congregation’s commitment to prayer, learning, and Jewish life.
