Iran’s Escalating Threat Strategy

This week, international media outlets reported that the Iranian Parliament is reportedly considering a legislative proposal offering a €50 million reward to anyone who assassinates US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and/or CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper.

The initiative, titled “Reciprocal Action by the Military and Security Forces of the Islamic Republic,” would seek to formalize threats previously voiced by sectors of the Iranian regime against figures considered responsible for attacks against Iran. Beyond its retaliatory dimension, the proposal also fits within a broader strategy aimed at mobilizing and coordinating Iran’s military forces amid an increasingly confrontational regional environment.

According to Ebrahim Azizi, Chairman of Iran’s National Security Commission, the measure would be presented as a response to the assassination of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In this context, the rhetoric of revenge once again occupies a central place within Iranian political discourse, reflecting a recurring dynamic in Middle Eastern conflicts, where retaliation is often framed as an act of justice or deterrence.

Until now, the proposal has not been approved. However, if it advances, it would represent a significant escalation: a political threat could evolve into a tool backed by institutional legitimacy. Such a development could intensify psychological pressure on the international community while simultaneously encouraging radicalized actors.
