Character is rarely tested in the moments we prepare for. It is not proven only in the grand public causes we argue about—justice, war, peace, or the future of nations. Often, it is revealed in unwatched moments: a medical room, a supermarket line, or any place where a person is vulnerable or simply asks for a little consideration, and no one else is keeping score.

This week, one everyday encounter and one simple thought experiment brought that home to me. They differ greatly in scale, but both raise a related and quiet question: How do we respond when another person’s wellbeing, trust, or simple convenience is placed in our hands?

Begin with a simple thought experiment: Imagine preparing for an MRI.

You change into a gown and lock away your clothing, wallet, phone, and other belongings. Because you cannot take the locker key with you into the MRI machine, you place it on a counter inside the MRI room before lying down.

Then you enter a loud, confined tube. You cannot sit up. You cannot see what is taking place around you. And you certainly cannot keep watch over the possessions you have been asked to leave behind.

Now imagine noticing, just before the scan begins, that someone has picked up the key you left on the counter and then put it back down.

There could be an entirely routine explanation. The point is not to assign a motive........
