Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, mocking his interactions with foreign leaders and his famous “hug diplomacy”.
“I don’t know where he got this idea from. Strange ideas get into people’s heads. He thinks this is foreign policy,” Gandhi said before giving his party colleague Sandeep Dikshit a hug. Dikshit then quipped, “Meloni samajh ke toh nahi pakda tha?” (You didn’t hug me thinking I was Meloni?), referring to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. To this, Gandhi replied, “I haven’t reached that stage yet,” drawing laughter from the gathering.
The exchange drew furious reactions from BJP leaders, including BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who on Friday dug out photographs of Gandhi’s grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with former Cuban President Fidel Castro and former Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
