Q: I’ve been with my partner for about eight months and things are going really well. We’re not living together yet, but it’s starting to feel like that conversation isn’t too far off. The thing is, we haven’t talked about money at all, and lately I’ve been wondering if we should. My colleagues at lunch were going at it the other day about their own situations. One couple splits everything 50/50 even though one person earns quite a bit more, and there’s clearly some tension around it. Another couple barely discusses money at all, and a third is dealing with the fallout from one partner discovering the other had been quietly carrying debt they didn’t know about. None of it sounds great. My partner and I have pretty different habits when it comes to spending. I tend to save and think ahead, and they’re more of a live-in-the-moment type. It hasn’t come up as a problem yet, but I’d rather figure out how to approach this before it does. Where do we even start? ~Jordan
