The Albanese government will stop the entry of students’ family members, attack “visa hopping”, and drastically cut the numbers of those on long-term working holidays under migration policy changes announced by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.

The government will prioritise permanent and temporary visas for workers in key sectors, including health care, construction, education, law enforcement, defence, resources, agriculture, aquaculture and fishing.

Changes to the points test will allow the minister to allocate extra points for skills in very high demand.

The long-awaited overhaul of the migration system comes as figures released on Thursday showed Net Overseas Migration (NOM) for the year to March coming down to 292,100, which is better than the budget forecast of 295,000 for 2025-26.

The government is committed to bringing the NOM to 225,000 by 2027-28. The changes........
