The US Navy is looking to purchase its first Trump-class battleship in next year’s budget. The first ship of the class could cost up to $17 billion.
The Trump-Class “Battleship” Is Coming
According to the Navy’s Fiscal Year 2028 five-year budget outlook, which is attached to the current Fiscal Year 2027 budget request, the purchase of the first Trump-class battleship is scheduled for 2028.
“We’ve been pursuing a larger surface combatant for many years. I think we’ve invested over five years in DDG(X) large surface combatant,” Navy Deputy Assistant Secretary for Budget Rear Admiral Ben Reynolds said.
The Trump-class battleship is part of a wider shipbuilding push to increase the Navy’s fighting numbers and bring it on par with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), which now outpaces the US Navy in terms of hull numbers. The Navy could buy up to 25 battleships under this initiative.
If the proposal manages to stay in the budget next year, the Navy will buy the first battleship while President Trump is still in office.
“This will be able to do many, many things that our DDGs cannot, just like the frigate fills a hole........
