The F-117 Nighthawk and B-2 Spirit were fundamentally built for the same purpose. So why did they look so different?

The F-117 Nighthawk and B-2 Spirit were the first two operational American bomber aircraft to feature stealth technology. Both emerged from highly classified late-Cold War programs, and both were built to penetrate the Soviet Union’s increasingly dense air defense system.

However, the F-117 and B-2 approached the problem in fundamentally different ways. While the F-117 was a small, tactical precision strike aircraft, the B-2 was an intercontinental strategic bomber. Comparing the two aircraft serves as a useful exercise in the rapid evolution of stealth technology.
