Beware: Trump's anti-immigrant push could crash the economy

The 2024 election sent a clear message: Americans are struggling financially and demand economic solutions from their leaders.

Nearly every exit poll in the last election identified the economy and affordability as the top voter concerns. President Donald Trump’s campaign resonated with promises to tackle inflation, protect jobs and introduce policies like “No Tax on Tips.” In contrast, the Harris campaign failed to convince voters that they could ease their financial burden.

As a result, in his first days in office, Trump made his approach to economic challenges clear: blaming immigrants. He signed multiple anti-immigrant executive orders, including ending birthright citizenship and the closure of the southern border. He signed the Laken Riley Act, allowing immigration officials to suspend due process and deport undocumented immigrants based solely on criminal charges, not convictions — the first Congressional bill to make it to Trump’s desk.

But if voters believe scapegoating and attacking immigrants will solve our economic challenges, they’re in for a rude awakening. These anti-immigrant policies are not only immoral but economically disastrous, threatening to harm us all.

Consider the cost of food. The fresh fruits and vegetables at your local supermarket are often picked, packed, distributed, stocked and sold by a majority immigrant workforce. The U.S. agricultural sector, which contributes over $1 trillion annually to the economy, is powered mainly by........
