America must continue to fight for its ideals

America has just acknowledged our 250th anniversary while our democracy is being dismantled by the current regime utilizing Project 2025.

The United States is experiencing déjà vu as we enter an era of the 2nd Redemption.

After the Civil War, Reconstruction advanced our freedoms and equality by passing the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, ensuring equality and the right to vote for Black men.

Yet the Confederate South never accepted racial equality. In response, in the 1870s, Confederates began the 1st Redemption through Klan violence, gerrymandering and a conservative Supreme Court, which struck down the 1875 Civil Rights Act, ushering in nearly a century of the Jim Crow era.

Black Americans persistently fought to restore their lost rights, resulting in the civil rights legislation of the 1960s, which some scholars labeled the Second Reconstruction.

However, the backlash to their restored equality has triggered a Second Redemption by the conservatives on the Supreme Court and the long-planned implementation of Project 2025.

Gerrymandering to prevent Black representation and solidify the current corruption and kleptocracy is again threatening our multiracial democracy.

America has continued to struggle against racial animus since our founding. The principles put forth in our Constitution and in the Declaration of Independence were ideals that we have yet to achieve, yet the founders clearly wanted our country to pursue.

Our responsibility as citizens is to resist the undemocratic tactics used by the current authoritarian regime.
