GUEST COLUMN: End zone slogans, Colin Kaepernick and the hypocrisy of it all

I love the sport of football. Football walks a thin line between violence and beauty, celebrating raw aggression while showcasing the beauty of the human body in motion.

At its best, football is an aesthetic sport, full of elegance, style, and grace.

Just watch a running back like Barry Sanders in slow motion, or a wide receiver like Odell Beckman Jr. suspended in midair while making a one-handed catch. The sport can be balletic.

But while I may love football, I do not love the NFL.

In recent years, I have become increasingly frustrated by the league’s hypocrisy, particularly its sideline and end zone slogans — “End Racism,” “Choose Love,” “Stop Hate,” and “It Takes all of Us.”

These messages are part of the NFL’s “Inspire Change” initiative, launched in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests against police brutality. The NFL “softened” its stance last February by replacing “End Racism” with the sanitized slogan “Choose Love” in the Super Bowl endzone.
