The Casement Park debacle is the perfect symbol of Stormont’s failures

“Whatever you say, say nothing when you talk about you know what” – so went the lyrics written by renowned Down folk singer Colum Sands.

In this instance, the “you know what” is Casement Park.

As Antrim County Board dig in over the Ulster GAA decision to make the Saffrons forgo their home advantage in the championship and play their fixture against All-Ireland winners Armagh in Páirc Esler in Newry, the elephant in the room is Casement.

Antrim has a tough call to make – rule themselves out of the championship by not playing, or travel to Newry which is almost home to Armagh, despite being the Down county stadium.

The Ulster Council needs to blink first. The GAA ethos is about fairness and equity – not just pounds and shillings. So let the game be played at Corrigan Park.

Although nothing can be taken for granted, Antrim (who have not reached an Ulster final since 2009) will need all the advantage they can muster against McGeeney’s warriors.

But this columnist rarely writes about sport – the back pages of The Irish News have many more eminent sporting opinions to read.

(The other reason is my jinx on those teams I follow in both football and soccer - namely An Dún, and my long-suffering and unrequited loyalty to Spurs.)

So I’ll stick to the politics, and say that the failure to rebuild........
