NOTHING that Donald Trump does has moral authority, because everything that he says and does is underpinned by his narcissism and psychological craving for self-aggrandisement, hero worship from the MAGA disciples and a domination of the media agenda.

Measured, cautious and thoughtful is not his thing. Never has been.

He is an abuser of power; a trampler on the constitution; a clear and present danger to democracy; a preposterous panjandrum; a congenital divider; and, worst of all perhaps, wilfully dysfunctional.

He is, in fact, the toilet equivalent of King Midas: everything he touches morphs into a turd, which somebody else, of course, has to clean up.

His presidency will likely be remembered as the most consequential in US history since 1776 (which he will regard as some sort of triumph).

He has reinvented America has a rogue state, and in so doing has set a precedent for both Russia and China to make their own moves fairly soon.

They are quietly watching him squander billions of dollars, run down America’s supply of missiles, unsettle his own electoral base, and nudge Europe towards constructing its own military superpower capable of going toe-to-toe if necessary and wrapped in an American-free NATO.
