Why Gen Z and millennials might ask for your credit score on a date
(NewsNation) — Recent studies suggest younger Americans are paying close attention to their prospective partner’s finances in the dating world, and in some instances, faking financial situations to find love.
A recent survey from the dating app Hily of more than 2,000 Gen Z and millennial daters in the U.S. found that nearly one-third said that learning someone has an excellent credit score makes them more attractive.
The findings also showed that roughly 20 percent of Gen Zers and about 25 percent of millennials believe dating apps should allow users to filter potential matches by credit score.
In response to the hyperfocus on finances, some are turning to “financial future faking,” a phenomenon described by Fortune as “when people make big promises to each other about sharing a home, lifestyle, or long-term financial security early in a relationship without any real intention or follow-through.”
A 2025 Credit One Bank survey of 1,000 Gen Z and millennial adults found that more than half said they’d lied about or exaggerated their finances.
To maintain those impressions, 37 percent say they’d go into debt for a date, with the data showing a gender divide: 46 percent of men 28 percent of women were willing to do so.
“Gen Z and millennials are particularly vulnerable to future financial faking for several reasons,” celebrity divorce attorney Jackie Combs told Fortune.
“They are dating in an era of unprecedented financial instability, defined by student debt, housing unaffordability, and delayed economic security,” Combs added.
