California deputy killed in line of duty prior to high-speed pursuit and crash
Police say a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputy was fatally shot Monday while responding to a domestic violence incident in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
Deputy Andrew Nunez was pronounced dead at an area hospital after he was shot in the head by a man who later led authorities on a high-speed chase on the 210 Freeway that ultimately ended with a violent crash.
Officials said Nunez had responded around 12:40 p.m. to the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga for a report of an armed man threatening a woman.
Upon arrival of deputies, the suspect allegedly opened fire immediately and struck Nunez once. Responding deputies administered first aid until paramedics arrived to transport Nunez by helicopter to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officials said Nunez was a six-year veteran with the Sheriff's Department. He was married with a 2-year-old daughter and was expecting a second child with his wife.
