Mangione pleads guilty to federal charges in UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty on Friday to federal stalking charges stemming from the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan two years ago, a development that comes just weeks before his state trial is slated to begin.

Mangione entered the plea during a pretrial conference before U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett that was hastily scheduled this week at the request of prosecutors and his defense team.

The 28-year-old is accused of shooting Thompson as the health executive walked into the New York Hilton Midtown to address an annual investors meeting. Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., following a five-day search that captivated the country.

He was found with a 9 mm pistol and silencer that authorities said matched the gun used in the shooting, a fake ID and a notebook with written grievances about the health insurance industry, among other items.
