(NewsNation) — Alex Murdaugh will get a new trial after South Carolina’s high court overturned his double murder conviction, but he’s not the only high-profile defendant to face a legal redo.
The state Supreme Court found Murdaugh was deprived of his constitutional right to a fair trial after former Colleton County clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors.
Prosecutors plan to retry the disgraced lawyer, saying no one is above the law.
“The prosecution is going to have to put on its case just like they did before, from the beginning, put on the same witnesses and the evidence, and Murdaugh is going to do the same on his end,” attorney Tre Lovell told NewsNation.
This retrial, like most, will likely be more streamlined because both sides now know what worked and what didn’t in the first case, he added.
Lovell says retrials are often shorter because attorneys can refine their witness lists and focus on the evidence that resonated most with jurors the first time around.
